ATT Unlocked iPhone Text messaging

The ATT unlocked iPhone prepaid or postpaid does away with one key feature of modern unlocked mobile phones: T9, better known as predictive text. Standing for Text on 9 keys, T9 was invented as a way to speed up texting, allowing mobile phone users to press just 4663 4663 when they wanted to say we have ‘gone home’ (the letters g-o-n-e and h-o-m-e are found on the keys 4, 6, 6 and 3) and then scroll through all the possible words that combination makes. For those who have got used to it, it is a massive timesaver.

Before T9, though, there was so-called Txt spk, or text speak, where abbreviations like ‘m8’, ‘lol’ and ‘cu l8r’ would be used as substitutes for the more cumbersome ‘mate’, ‘laugh out loud’ and ‘see you later’. Now we have the US unlocked GSM 3G iPhone, which has once again revolutionised the way SMS text messaging works. It understands text speak, capitalising lol to LOL as appropriate, but in all other ways it throws out the rulebook.

On regular unlocked cell phones like Nokia 6500 or unlocked Blackberry Storm, incoming and outgoing messages are usually stored in separate locations and it is difficult to refer between the two, or even relate one to another. This is fine for organising a dinner or date, but not so good if you want to use text messaging as a legitimate business application. Although email applications work in a similar way, without outgoing messages stored in the sent box, you can at least quote sections of messages back to each other so that you can both see at a glance how the conversation is progressing. SMS on the unlocked iPhone postpaid works just like an instant messaging application, and indeed looks very similar to iChat, the messaging client built into Mac OS X. It presents each entry in an SMS conversation as a speech bubble, with outgoing notes and their replies interspersed so that you can see what kind of response each one elicited.

Messages are organized through the unlocked smartphone SMS entry on the Home screen, with a menu showing you a list of all the contacts with whom you have had SMS contact. Tap one and it will bring up a conversation-style record of those contacts over time, with each part time and date stamped. Any messages to or from someone who is not yet in your inbox will be filed under their number, with a button to add them to your contacts.

Sending a text message

ATT unlocked iphone new messages are composed by tapping the square button with the pen inside it at the top of the menu screen, which will open a new blank message and position your cursor in the To: box, ready for your contact’s number. If you want to send a message to someone already stored in your address book, press the blue + button to the right of this box and select your contact. Alternatively, just start typing your contact’s name and, if they are in your address book, the application will attempt to complete the entry for you. You can add several contacts by pressing the + button again for each additional person, and the unlocked iPhone will send identical messages to each one in turn.

Once your contacts have been added, tap in the oval entry box just above the keyboard and type your message; then tap Send. Be sure you have checked your spelling before you do this and that the unlocked iPhone’s built-in spelling checker has not introduced any words you did not expect, as it is sent immediately.

If you only want to send a message to one single contact, you can do so by tapping the Text Message button below their entry in the contacts list. This will drop you into the SMS application and pre-populate their details in the To field.

Your sent messages sent by US cellular smartphones like the iphone will be archived under the contact’s name or, if they’re not in your address book, their number, with replies added below it as they arrive.

Using your unlocked cheap iphone application to watch stocks

Stock markets can rise and fall by enormous amounts during the course of a daily commute, and unless you have a dedicated broker who will call you to warn you of market fluctuations, you can never be sure that you will not be missing out on a fortune (or losing one) when you are away from the office.

Fortunately, the unlocked iPhone’s default software bundle includes a Stocks application. It is a cheap unlocked iPhone double-sided application, so tapping the ‘i’ in the lower-right corner flips it around, allowing you to add the names or symbols of the stocks you want to follow on the reverse. Stocks are added by tapping the + icon at the top of the panel and entering their name or symbol. For Apple, you could use either the name Apple itself, or AAPL, its ticker symbol, while for its Redmond rival you could enter either Microsoft or MSFT. Bradford & Bingley is, rather confusingly, BB.L, and Tesco is TSCO. Sun Microsystems, in the past couple of years, changed its ticker symbol to JAVA, the name of its most recognized technology. Once you have entered the name or symbol, the application will search for matching stocks, allowing you to choose the one you want.

Back on the front of the application interface, your stocks’ current prices and the amount by which they have risen or fallen will be shown on the unlocked iphone touchscreen, with climbers in green and fallers in red. Tapping the change indicators switches between percentage changes and real value changes in the appropriate local currency, while the graph at the bottom of the screen shows each stock’s performance. Tapping between the stocks changes the graph as appropriate, while using the duration tabs for one year, six months, three months and so on, immediately above the graph, narrows the performance to specific periods.
