It is not often that two stars align creating what can only be termed “phenomenal synergy.” Such is the case of new USA President Barak Obama aligning with Research in Motion (RIM) - the initiator and owner of the brand Blackberry, representing state of the art cell phones offered to the USA and international markets. President Obama needs no introduction given all the publicity he has attracted conducting the Obama campaign to get Obama acceptance. As an indication of the stature of RIM, their 2009 3rd quarter revenues was reported at $2.78 billion (up from $1.67 billion from same time last year) – an increase of 66%. A full 81% of this achievement was the 6.7 million cell phones actually shipped in the latest three month period. Underlying RIM’s profitability was the $382 million they put into administration, selling and marketing to attract consumers entering the 3G GSM US cellular arena for the first time, as well as attacking major competitors (iphone and Nokia N96). Daunting as these numbers are they fade into insignificance when compared to the “Obama factor” as we term it. How did these two “stars” align and exactly what is the “Obama factor”? Mr. Obama in an Obama speech attested to being the owner and user of a Blackberry, was very vocal against attempts by Washington to part him from it for security reasons.. By stating that he could not face being parted from his Blackberry, Mr. Obama - arguably the most revered and admired man on earth right now (certainly the most focused in the USA) – has given RIM a once in a millennium boost; an unparalleled opportunity that did more for RIM’s positive image and sales generation than millions of incremental marketing dollars. It could be said that Mr. Obama’s vocal reactions to losing his Blackberry has single-handedly launched RIM into the stratosphere for literally zero dollars. RIM, in true entrepreneurial form, has responded by making the company symbolically if not practically the cutting edge in digital, customized, secure unlocked cell phones. To make the Blackberry safe for the President of the USA the Whitehouse staff and homeland security have worked with RIM technologies to provide Barack Obama with a Blackberry unlocked cell phone that meets all their security standards. This gives new meaning to the concept customization in the arena of wireless internet. In effect RIM has created a one-of-a-kind unlocked brand specific to Mr. Obama’s exact requirements – or very close to. His unlocked mobile phone will run encryption to ensure security is ironclad. Security encryption at this time is unknown but it likely to be similar to products such as Koolspan's Trustchip technology. The latter offers an SD Card version of their system known as Trustchip that provides secure storage of one’s most sensitive information. By using this option items such as user address book, calendar, e-mail and sensitive corporate data can be stored with maximum security in the hardware-protected, tamper-proof TrustChip; most importantly it cannot be accessed without knowledge of the secret user’s specific PIN. Losing a TrustChip is not an issue at any time as it doesn’t expose data or put that data at risk of being read into. A TrustChip requires registration and once done will not work in any other device, thus offering users complete peace of mind. Based on this, it is still possible to create even higher measures of security utilizing Koolspan’s FPGA version, which can be adapted to support any hardware. It goes without saying that once Mr. Obama’s term (probably eight years) has run its course, he will have traveled the world many times. When international connection comes into the equation, unlocked phones cost-wise are the only way to go. Mr. Obama is preaching prudence and frugality, two words that fully describe the benefits of eliminating roaming charges (a virtually unavoidable and exorbitant cost when the mobile phone is locked to AT&T, T Mobile or Verizon). Due to unlocked cell phone technology Obama can travel anywhere and insert any Sim card – thus removing roaming as a cost issue. Mr. Obama is likely to use different cards and numbers from time to time to ensure Identity is constantly changing. Simply put, Blackberry has translated Mr. Obama’s goals of stopping debt and bringing down the massive deficit, by creating every reason to stay away from long term wireless contracts. Mr. Obama is practicing what he preaches - US households should follow his example. The tendency in the past has been to accept the traditional provider’s word for it when signing up for a cell phone service and that can mean committing to extra charges that are easy to avoid by separating buying the phone from the service .
